So we're in the watershed (12-month) year of ERISA's 50th Anniversary and what do we get? A watershed moment for Nikki Glaser. (Maybe my worst-ever most-forced connection back to ERISA ever, just so I could talk about something of interest to me?)
Anyway, I just want to genuflect a bit for Nikki here. I've always thought she was funny, sorta. I felt she didn't find the right line between crass and, well, not crass. And then I saw her on the Brady roast. Wow. Kevin Hart's adoring reaction was so genuine and so deserved. Hmm.
And then I heard she got the Globes. I was surprised. Jo Koy had set the lowest of low bars for her, but this choice for host seemed like another bad one.
And then I read her interviews during the run-up to the show. She seemed absurdly focused and reflective. She was talking like a seasoned professional, not a slutty jokester. Hmm.
Well, it was obvious from Moment One of her performance that she had this, maybe historically so. I think that this effort will go down (no pun intended) with Chris Rock's first HBO special as an example of when someone is given an opportunity to be special, and goes ahead and changes the path of entertainment with an iconic effort. Compare Rock's HBO debut with Garofalo's.
Then, in her post-success Stern interview during which she reflected on the evening, she gives yet additional insight into the care she took, by chronically things she DIDN'T do. That background added even more to the picture for me.
Gonna be fun to watch her trajectory. Is she even the next Billy Crystal? I'll always like having seen the Brady/Globe one-two punch in realtime and felt like I was there for the emergence of something special.
All of that during the year of ERISA's 50th! (Sorry.)
Happy New Year!
